Academic Center Named to Honor Governor Kay Ivey

The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences announced on October 29, 2026, that its academic center will be named after Governor Kay Ivey. This recognition celebrates Ivey’s pivotal role in establishing Alabama’s first residential public high school dedicated to preparing students for healthcare careers.

The School’s Mission and Opening

Focused on addressing statewide workforce shortages, particularly in rural communities, the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences admitted its inaugural class in August 2026 on a temporary campus at the University of West Alabama in Livingston. The tuition-free, public school currently serves 79 ninth- and tenth-grade students, integrating college-preparatory academics with specialized healthcare instruction and hands-on training. Students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized credentials while still in high school, as part of a residential model designed to extend access across Alabama.

Honoring Leadership and Vision

A ceremony commemorating the dedication brought together Governor Ivey, the school’s first class, and educational leaders. Rob Pearson, vice president of the school’s foundation, highlighted Ivey’s early and continued support, stating, “You believed in these students before the first one ever applied. You believed in this school before there was a board, a faculty, a curriculum, or a classroom. And you believed in us before we fully understood what you were asking us to become.”

Addressing Rural Workforce Shortages

Alabama faces notable healthcare workforce shortages, especially in rural areas where over 2.1 million residents live, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Hospital leaders throughout the state have cited vacancies for positions such as physical therapy assistants, respiratory therapists, lab technicians, phlebotomists, doctors, and nurses. The need is amplified by an aging rural population and increased demand for care. The school aims to provide a pipeline of skilled professionals equipped to meet these challenges and support Alabama’s healthcare workforce.

Student Perspectives and Partnerships

Speaking during the ceremony, freshman Ellie Pemberton from Elmore County thanked the governor, saying, “Because of your support, and because leaders across our state believed in your vision, students like me are able to pursue our dreams and prepare for bright futures.” Students hail from 45 communities across the state, reinforcing the school’s statewide reach.

The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences partners with hospitals and health care facilities to provide clinical experiences, internships, and employment opportunities, strengthening the connection between education and career.

Permanent Campus and Future Growth

The school's permanent, 10-acre campus is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 academic year next to Whitfield Regional Hospital, one of its health care partners. Designed by Caldwell Architects and under construction by Brasfield & Gorrie, the new facilities will feature a three-story academic building (site of the naming ceremony), a five-story residential building, and an activities center. The expansion will allow for increased enrollment and further development of the school’s mission.

Bloomberg Philanthropies and State Support

The school’s establishment has garnered broad support, including a $26.4 million investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies in January 2024. This forms part of a national initiative to create healthcare-focused high schools in 13 communities. Governor Ivey made the school a legislative priority and signed its authorizing legislation in May 2024. She later joined community leaders for the campus groundbreaking in October 2025.
