Google has begun the official deployment of Android 16 following several months of testing and anticipation. Pixel phone owners receive Android 16 first while other Android device users will get it within the next few weeks or months.

Pixel devices will receive the OTA update beginning today. Users who prefer immediate access can download system images and update files from Google’s developer site. Users have no need to rush since Android 16 initially presents only a small number of new features.

What’s New in Android 16?

▶ Cleaner Notification Management

Android 16 refines the notification experience. Bundled notifications existed since Android 7.0 Nougat but now this version requires all notifications to be bundled. The Android 16 system combines multiple alerts from one application into one expandable notification to reduce visual clutter and enhance user clarity.

▶ Live Update Notifications

The update also introduces live update notifications. Rideshare and delivery applications first offered real-time status updates through these system features. When you tap them a pop-up appears with a live progress bar. Google has collaborated with Samsung and OnePlus to connect this feature with their systems including Now Bar and Live Alerts.

▶ Expanded Security with Advanced Protection

Advanced Protection which used to work only for accounts now protects all Android 16 devices. Activating this feature prevents 2G network connections while blocking access to unsecured websites and USB device system data access which greatly strengthens device security.

▶ Fun with Emojis

Through the Pixel Studio app users can generate custom emojis utilizing Emoji Kitchen’s latest generative AI feature.

▶ Developer-Focused Enhancements

App developers benefit from concealed enhancements in Android 16 (API level 36). This version allows apps to automatically adapt to larger displays which greatly benefits users who operate tablets and foldable devices. The update provides advanced camera capabilities including motion photos, hybrid auto-exposure, night mode detection and HDR screenshot support.

Google maintains its effort to restrict background processes to enhance efficiency but this change could negatively impact some applications.

Pixel Drop: New Features for Pixel Users

Google’s release of Android 16 comes with a new Pixel Drop feature. This update may not have many features but contains several substantial improvements.

Pixel VIPs: A revamped “favorite contacts” feature. Users can access a dedicated home screen widget that displays recent messages from Messages and WhatsApp and other information such as birthdays and shared locations for VIP contacts. The system will ignore Do Not Disturb mode when these features are activated.

Accessibility Improvements: The magnifier app now offers improved hearing aid compatibility along with enhanced live search functionality.

Expanded Availability: The UK, Canada, and Australia now have support for Expressive Captions.

Only Pixel devices that operate on Android 16 will have access to these features.

Big Features Coming Later This Year

Google now releases Android features at a slower rate than in previous years. The colorful design refresh of Material 3 Expressive is not included in this release. Debuting on Pixel devices for this year developers should begin preparing their apps for this transition.

Another anticipated addition is the desktop mode. In partnership with Samsung, this capability enables tablet devices to operate with floating windows that mimic desktop operating systems. Smartphones and foldable phones require an external display to support this functionality. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold lacks support for running multiple app windows directly on the device. Google’s phones will provide complete functionality while other Android 16 devices will offer basic screen mirroring capabilities based on the OEM decisions.

New Update Schedule for Android

A quiet shift: Google has altered its Android release timeline. Google has changed Android updates so major releases now occur in spring starting with Android 16 and feature updates follow later in the year.

Android 16 represents a minor advancement now but serves as the foundation for significant developments by 2025. Google will now offer its Android innovations through multiple releases instead of a single launch event creating a more dynamic user experience.
