Marvel Confirms June Premiere for Ironheart on Disney+
Ryan Coogler is on a roll. His new film Sinners hit theaters over the summer, and he just scored another win with the May box office haul. He’s got another high-profile project on deck with Marvel’s new limited series Ironheart, of which the studio released a new teaser trailer today, just a few days before the June 2025 premiere.
Scheduled to debut on Disney+ this June, Ironheart is the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a teenage technology whiz and self-described “megatalent.” In the comics, she is known as Ironheart, a protégé of Tony Stark. This show will mark the final television entry in the MCU’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced in December 2020, at which point the series was on track to premiere in 2023. The studio later made some significant changes to its long-term strategy, shrinking the number of new offerings released each year in response to market saturation concerns, and pushed its start date back to this summer. During a 2024 D23 presentation, Marvel showed footage from Ironheart and described the series as “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.” The studio’s president, Kevin Feige, also said that the show would have a “much darker, more grounded vibe” than most MCU offerings.
Riri Williams made her debut in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In that movie, Riri, a gifted MIT student, built a vibranium detector that put her at odds with Namor and his blue-skinned army. Riri forms a connection with Shuri, her college friend, over their shared interest in science and eventually creates an armored suit in Iron Man’s likeness to help Wakanda fight back. When the threat is over, Riri has to leave the suit behind with the Wakandans before returning to her MIT studies.
A Tech-Themed Crime Series with Marvel Mystery Science Vibes
Ironheart takes place soon after the events of Wakanda Forever. The official description reads, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
Lyric Ross will play Natalie Washington, Riri’s best friend, and Alden Ehrenreich is Joe McGillicuddy. Manny Montana, Matthew Elam, and Anji White are Cousin John, Xavier Washington, and Riri’s mother, Ronnie, respectively. Shea Coulée will play a character named Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role as the dean of MIT from the original 2016 Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen will also make an appearance, but Marvel is keeping mum on who he’s playing.
The new trailer shows Riri breaking into a closed-down pizza joint, only to become trapped in a poison-filled elevator with just two minutes to get out. The would-be thief has been lured into a setup, or what a man over the intercom playfully dubs an “interview,” by a masked vigilante known as The Hood. On the intercom, he threatens Riri with asphyxiation unless she gets to a box installed in the middle of the floor and steals the gas mask stored inside. Riri shows no interest in playing the game, but she does create a unique solution to the problem.
Impressed with her resourcefulness, The Hood offers Riri a spot on his team of sorts. As he tells her, his goal and hers is to make something “iconic,” and she just might be the right person to do it. A brief moment of trepidation gives way to an agreement, even though Riri’s friends are immediately concerned. Riri’s best friend, Natalie, in particular, is skeptical about going into business with a masked vigilante with a mysterious agenda. Riri’s faith in the man known as The Hood could be rewarded—especially given that he tells her, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Feige hinted at the moral cost of ambition in the MCU when he described Ironheart’s tone. The first season will likely put Riri to the test as she tries to navigate that world of unethical opportunities. It also may not be long before The Hood’s ends come into conflict with his methods, at which point he might turn to Riri to help carry out his particular vision. Fans will have to wait until next summer to find out.
Ironheart’s first three episodes will all premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the last three episodes following every week. There is no word on whether a second season is in the works, but that possibility has not been ruled out. In the meantime, viewers can catch some more action, tension, and character moments in the trailer as well as a new behind-the-scenes featurette.
