Final Ballerina Preview Highlights Deadly Determination
It’s been a few weeks since the release of the first trailer for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, and anticipation for the Ana de Armas-led spin-off has been building ever since. After what felt like a rollercoaster wait following its surprise announcement back in September 2023, the John Wick spin-off film has a solid release date for June 6, 2025, and we have another round of new footage to tide us over.
Set to take place during John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the second installment of the spin-off trilogy was first teased during the premiere of the highly anticipated Parabellum. In the film, Keanu Reeves’ titular character was placed “excommunicado” by the High Table for the killing of crime lord Santino D’Antonio inside the grounds of the Continental Hotel. Having a multi-million-dollar bounty on his head, John Wick had to go on the run, and as he was being chased through New York City by all his bounty hunters, he eventually reached the headquarters of a crime syndicate, the Ruska Roma.
Acting as the shadowy and powerful organization that provided Wick with refuge in his moment of need, the Ruska Roma has also featured in the third chapter of the John Wick saga in Parabellum. Led by a character simply known as the Director (played by Anjelica Huston), the Ruska Roma was a brutal crime syndicate that acted as a training ground and adopted many young girls into the organization as its ballerina-assassins. Parabellum featured a brief scene that showed one of its young ballerina recruits (played by Unity Phelan) rehearsing for a dance performance onstage, and it’s this character who would later be known as Eve Macarro, the star of the Ballerina trilogy and Ana de Armas’ first big franchise role.
The character of Eve Macarro was officially confirmed in April 2024 during the release of the first teaser for Ballerina, and she is set to appear in a total of three films that will debut before the second half of 2025. In the first trailer, the character was said to be someone who had been adopted into the Ruska Roma, the ballerina-assassins brigade, to “take revenge” after her father was killed. Ana de Armas, a Cuban actress and Hollywood veteran, is set to star in the franchise and take on the lead role of Eve Macarro in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which is set to release on June 6, 2025.
Ballerina will also feature several well-known actors who have previously appeared in other entries in the franchise. This includes Anjelica Huston as the Director and Ian McShane as Winston. Fans will also get to see Lance Reddick make an appearance in the role of the Continental’s most reliable concierge, Charon. Reddick passed away in March 2023 and had his final on-screen appearance added to Ballerina since the actor’s death.
Other cast members who have been added to the film include Gabriel Byrne as the Chancellor, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Nogi, Norman Reedus as Daniel Pine, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and David Castañeda, though the characters they will be playing are yet to be confirmed.
On a Vengeful Path in the Newest John Wick Footage
The first official trailer for Ballerina was released in September 2024 and took a detailed look at the origins of Ana de Armas’ character, Eve Macarro. As such, the earliest footage of the spin-off revealed that Eve had been orphaned as a child, and after joining the ballerina-assassin brigade within the Ruska Roma, she set out to take revenge on the person who killed her father.
That first trailer for the film revealed a bit more about the character’s emotional arc and backstory, but as John Wick is an ensemble franchise, the mystery man himself was only glimpsed for a brief moment. It was a promising start, but it also left fans thirsty for more footage and any information about what other familiar faces would return for the film.
March 2025 came, and with it, a second official trailer for Ballerina was released, giving fans the sort of preview they were hoping to see. Featuring far more on-screen time from both John Wick and Ana de Armas’ characters, the new footage revealed a raw, gritty, and atmospheric meeting between the two assassins in the middle of a snow-covered landscape. It’s one that suggested the two would have a significant amount of screen time together in the new film, with a shared understanding of what it means to be at the top of their profession in a world that never seems to stop hunting them.
The newest and final trailer for Ballerina, however, shows both Eve and Wick at the top of their game with a far more confident and direct visual style. The first teaser opens with an immediate confrontation — a shot of Ana de Armas’ character, Eve, looking up while at the same time caught in the gun sights of the John Wick character. It’s a tense and foreboding start that serves to immediately grab attention and pull viewers into the harsh world that the film is set in.
The rest of the footage that follows from the new trailer is a blend of new and previously released material, but it’s also a finely-tuned montage of fight scenes and close-quarter gunfights. It builds in intensity as Eve is seen engaged in one-on-one combats with a seemingly endless stream of armed opponents in a series of very balletic, choreographed stunts. As well as showcasing Ana de Armas’ physique and her commitment to her character’s role, the sequences are also seamlessly cut with a series of interactions between her and the John Wick character, which appear to be more mentor-student than anything else.
