Spock’s “Too Slow” Moment Steals Strange New Worlds Trailer
Paramount+ released the first official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 today (June 28). Season 3 will premiere on July 17, 2025. The official trailer follows an April teaser trailer. Although the details are few, the first look at Season 3 promises plenty of action from the premiere.
Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended on a major cliffhanger as a surprise attack from the Gorn left the U.S.S. Enterprise crew members held hostage on a Federation colony world, along with other surviving refugees. In the series finale, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is forced to make a difficult choice – follow Starfleet orders and retreat or go against them and try to rescue the hostages. Pike’s characteristically impulsive decision leads to further disaster, and Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 picks up the story right where it left off.
The footage shown last October at the New York City Comic-Con offered a glimpse at Season 3, beginning where the second season finale left off and showing a massive, claustrophobic space battle – just one of the series’ trademarks. The new official trailer builds on that, promising the continuation of this new conflict in the season premiere and its likely resolution, with some new wrinkles.
It was only a matter of time before the Enterprise under Captain Pike would get into hot water again, and it does not appear the crew will escape the Gorn’s clutches so easily. Although this overarching season conflict with the Gorn will likely be resolved by the season’s end, a new villain will emerge in Strange New Worlds Season 3 to test Pike and the crew’s loyalties to the limits and their courage and resiliency in the process. Viewers can also expect the season to continue to explore different and more personal story arcs like Strange New Worlds has in its first two seasons, mixing Trek-friendly episodes with those that focus on the crew’s faith, duty, romance, and occasionally comedy and mystery. As Paramount+ states, even the shift of genres will be different from those in previous Trek series.
The main and recurring cast from Seasons 1 and 2 are expected to return in Strange New Worlds Season 3 to continue their adventures in space. Among the many returning cast members, new faces are expected to join, including Cillian O’Sullivan as Dr. Roger Korby. Korby is a character from Star Trek: The Original Series, originally played by Michael Strong, making this appearance a legacy cameo of sorts for Strange New Worlds. Korby in Strange New Worlds, which is set in the mid-2260s, is a renowned archaeologist, an expert in medical archaeology, and the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). The reappearance of Chapel’s long-lost fiancé on the Enterprise is bound to cause some much-needed friction on the bridge, especially as Chapel has been revealed to be involved in a romantic relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 will also introduce Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt to the series as guest stars, the latter a regular voice for Comedy Central’s Seinfeld. Strange New Worlds has made a point of introducing such name actors to the series when possible, and both have extensive comedy experience. The April teaser trailer had already revealed this new episode variety, with episodes focusing on “big new adventures” as well as smaller stories that are episodic. The new official trailer underscores this tonal shift of Strange New Worlds in 2025, depicting the crew as friends and young people making small talk and awkwardly working out romantic entanglements (looking at you, Spock and Chapel) as well as recovering from an unexpected explosion from a botched science experiment.
A mysterious character in the official trailer also points to a new development for Season 3, as James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is briefly seen sitting in the captain’s chair. The brief tease offers no hints at Kirk’s role in Strange New Worlds Season 3, but this will certainly be a powerful experience for Kirk. Pike, in the brief trailer scene, appears to be giving the young Kirk a word of advice (or a warning?) about the Starfleet captain’s role, to say the least: “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The clip ends on a lighter note than the trailer, to offer a surprisingly genuine, funny exchange. The Vulcan Oswalt plays with Spock on the bridge in what is an otherwise unremarkable scene. After awkwardly checking that his “human friend” understands what a “high five” is and successfully demonstrating it, Spock is asked by Oswalt to go “down low” before they “smash.” Spock proceeds to perform the move just as often seen in memes online, provoking the confused Vulcan into asking, “Why would you do that?” Spock, deadpan as usual, replies, “Because you are too slow.”
Release Date and Episode Schedule
The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres Thursday, July 17, 2025, on Paramount+. Subsequent new episodes will be released weekly on Thursdays through September 11, 2025, giving fans nearly two months of Strange New Worlds in 2025.
Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was already renewed, following the show’s steady rise in popularity with both Trekkies and new fans alike. With the franchise’s mix of episodic and serialized storytelling and focus on visual detail and character development, Strange New Worlds has found its niche in Star Trek’s future.
